In days gone by, Austria’s emperors would often visit Lake Achensee to escape the heat of the city in summer. Why not follow in their footsteps while spending your summer holidays in the Alps? Tyrol’s largest lake is nestled between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges and is dotted with picturesque mountain villages. Adventure fans mustn’t miss the Achensee 5-Summit via ferrata, which leads across the five main peaks of the Rofan mountains and can be accessed by cable car from the village of Maurach. For fun on the water, you can try your hand at a range of water sports, from kite surfing and stand-up paddle boarding to sailing. And of course, what could be better on a hot summer’s day than plunging into the cool, crystal-clear waters from one of the lake’s bathing beaches?
